Long term obesity may impact heart health, a new study has found. The study published in the journal BMC Public Health. The study was conducted on 264230 individuals of age 18 years or above who were overweight and their health parameters were observed for 11 years..The participants were categorised into four groups - overweight, class-1, class-2 and class-3 group, according to WHO guidelines. The results showed that people who were extremely obese had three times more risk of having heart failure or developing severe heart disease than those who were overweight. The risk of heart disease increased in people who could not manage their weight and who were socio-economically deprived. The observations suggest that early management of weight and bariatric surgery along with lifestyle modifications in overweight and obese people may help prevent the risk of stroke, heart attack, blockages in the arteries and irregular heartbeat.
